The energy sector is changing rapidly due to the increasing need for electricity, making flexibility and resilience critical. To meet these challenges, we continue to grow our network of locations to which mobile batteries can be deployed to support electricity grids around the world. At Skoon, we call this a ‘Grid Hub.’

Grid Hubs provide infrastructure that allows Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs) to request additional demand or supply when needed. This helps maintain balance and reliability across the grid at all times.

Together with our partners, we are proud to introduce our new Grid Hub in Arnhem at K3 Delta’s site, controlled by optimizer Eddy Grid. This location has the capacity to facilitate 6 containerized mobile batteries, comprising 1.5 MW of total power. Current suppliers include AggrekoPon Energy Rental, and Refurb Battery.

Solving battery idle time without risking asset lifetime

Mobile battery rental companies often experience seasonal demand, as they specialize in industries like construction or events. Without Grid Hubs, their systems would be stored in a yard. However, when connected to a Grid Hub, these systems supply energy exactly where it is needed most. The modular design enables fast transitions, which ensures flexibility between rental projects and Grid Hub storage.

In the past, rental companies tended to focus on maximizing the lifetime of battery assets. It is a fact that, on Grid Hubs, batteries are used more intensively, sometimes running multiple cycles a day. Nonetheless, we see very little effect of this, as data on our platform shows that the same assets run very little cycle when they are on rental projects. Therefore, the effect averages out, and there is no significant degradation effect on the asset.

At the same time, the prices of mobile batteries are declining rapidly thanks to advances in battery technology. To remain competitive, it is essential to make the most of the current fleet while continuing to invest in the latest technology.

How our Grid Hub maximize value, flexibility revenue

The Grid Hub supports battery trading across different asset types, thanks to its integrated IoT controller developed by our partner Withthegrid. This controller enables seamless coordination between various batteries and operating systems, increasing participation opportunities for asset owners.

Grid connections often remain underutilized outside of peak periods, during the day, or even throughout the year. Grid Hubs offer a solution by using mobile batteries to make the most of this idle capacity. The load profile of a horticultural company below shows an example of such underutilized capacity for most of the year:

To ensure optimal performance in today’s dynamic energy landscape, the Arnhem Grid Hub is managed by our partner Eddy Grid. Through advanced, data-driven control, Eddy Grid optimizes revenue streams during storage via intraday markets, passive imbalance services, and ex-post market participation.

Together with the infrastructure and software platform, we make it easy to integrate a wide range of grid services. This plug-and-play approach ensures that optimizing batteries and maximizing grid flexibility has never been simpler.

Value drivers at a glance:

  • Unlock revenue during storage: use downtime to participate.

  • Asset interoperability: trade across different battery types and operating systems via IoT control, maximizing market access.

  • Grid support: provide services to grid operators through redispatch during congestion, ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply.

An infrastructure for the future of flexible energy

In a market where agility drives success, flexibility opens the door to new possibilities. Connecting batteries to a flexible energy network enables owners to turn potential into profit.

The Grid Hub at Arnhem demonstrates how modular, smart design can align the needs of battery owners, grid operators, and the energy market. It offers a reliable way to store mobile batteries during downtime while unlocking revenue opportunities and supporting grid stability when it matters most.

For those looking to make flexible energy work harder, hubs like these are an important part of the solution.
