Identify risks and opportunities around the grid

For private equity, infrastructure funds, lenders and corporate M&A teams. When grid access and energy costs affect what a company or asset is worth, we tell you how large that risk is, what the opportunities are, and what both mean for the value.

The risk investors miss

An investment model can assume a site will grow. The grid may not allow it. In large parts of the Netherlands, extra capacity means a waiting list that can run for years.

  • Growth on a full grid. The plan needs more capacity than the connection allows, and the queue for more is long.
  • Energy assumptions that don't hold. Battery and flexibility revenues, tariffs and contract terms that a grid operator would not accept as written.
  • Contracts outside the model. Non-firm and flex contracts that limit capacity at set times, with costs the financial model leaves out.

The opportunities investors miss

A full grid is not only a risk. A company that knows how to work with it can grow where competitors wait, and run at lower cost.

  • Capacity without waiting. Non-firm and flex contracts, or a group contract with neighbours, can add capacity years before the grid is reinforced.
  • Assets that can earn. A battery or flexible load can earn from congestion services and energy markets when the site doesn't need it.
  • Lower energy costs. Shifting load, cutting peaks and choosing the right contract structure can lower grid and energy costs in the portfolio company.

What we review

  • Grid connection and congestion risk

For each target site: the current connection, the prospects for expansion, likely waiting times, and the non-firm and flex alternatives.

  • Energy business case review

Assumptions on batteries, flexibility revenues, tariffs and contract structures, checked against how grid operators actually decide.

  • Value creation after acquisition

Where flexibility, CSP contracts or load shifting can support growth or cut costs in the portfolio company.
