Grid Connection Waiting List in the Netherlands

    The growing waiting list

The Dutch electricity grid is at capacity in many regions. Businesses requesting new connections or additional capacity face waiting times that in some areas extend to 2036 and beyond. This affects everything from datacenters to construction sites to logistics hubs.

Why the queue is so long

Grid expansion takes 10-15 years and costs billions. The rapid growth of renewable energy (solar, wind), electrification of transport and heating, and industrial growth have outpaced grid capacity. Grid operators are working hard on solutions, but physical infrastructure takes time.

How to get off the waiting list sooner

Grid operators increasingly offer flex contracts and congestion-mitigating measures to help businesses get connected sooner:

    • CBC: Accept limited capacity during peak times
    • CSC: Provide active flexibility with a battery or generator
    • Congestion-mitigating measure: Invest in a battery to prove you'll burden the grid less — get priority

    The new Energy Act 2026

From January 1, 2026, the new Energy Act changes how grid operators prioritize connections. Small consumer connections will no longer receive automatic priority, making flex solutions even more important for all connection sizes.
