Behind the scenes at Skoon: what happens when you submit your request for energy?

A journey towards powering a sustainable construction site.

Hey there clean energy user!

As you know, Skoon connects the demand for mobile energy with the supply of clean energy systems. Be it for a remote film set or a construction site. Skoon’s aim is to do this as efficient as possible, to be able to make clean energy available to as many people and companies as possible. Efficiency often means automation and therefore, Skoon is using software, tools and data analysis to support this process. But of course, we cannot do this without the human touch.

Let’s show how this works in practice, based on an example case in the construction industry!

Sammy Smith is a manager of a new construction site, where new EV charging points are built. Sammy has three electrical excavators, two accommodation units for the staff that have air conditioning and of course a coffee maker. The construction site doesn’t have a connection to the electricity grid yet, so mobile energy is a necessity.

Sammy works for a company that is mindful of costs but not at the expense of the employees or the environment. Sammy looks online to see what options are available. A quick Google search on ‘rent clean energy’ guides Sammy to Skoon Sharing the online marketplace for clean mobile energy.

Skoon’s recurring or more experienced customers directly book their system on the marketplace. For larger projects, more complex set-ups, or customers that don’t speak the mobile energy jargon of energy yet, Skoon’s energy experts are ready to help.

It’s Sammy’s first time working with a clean mobile energy system, so she decides to request help from Skoon.

Often on construction sites, there is no grid connection available from the start. Therefore, mobile energy is required.

Based on the message Sammy sent on Skoon Sharing, we do not have all information to meet Sammy her needs just yet. Therefore, a Skoon energy expert jumps in to find out what other information is available. Questions asked can be:

  • What’s the location of the construction site?
  • What is the required power output for the excavators and accommodation units, and how many hours during the day this power output would be needed?
  • If there is a grid connection or other type of energy source where the energy system can charge the battery.

Based on this conversation we define the parameters that Skoon’s software uses to match the right energy system.

Nowadays, clean energy systems are cheaper than fossil fuel systems. Based on complex calculations (think of generator dimension, load profiles and clean energy configurations) we show an expected cost indication for three types of energy system set-ups: all-electric (charging the battery on the grid or solar panels), hybrid (charging the battery on a diesel generator) or just using a diesel generator.

With the information we can also get our first insights into the environmental savings that we’ll bring about:

Sammy of course agrees that this is the best option for the construction site, so we can make a match with an available energy system, close by in terms of physical location and with the right specifications for the job.

Based on the parameters outlined in the phone call, we have found our match (which is chosen at random, to stay independent here):

Sammy accepts the offer and Skoon then reserves the energy system in the homegrown software that connects with all supplier’s clean energy systems, Skoon Suite.

Through Skoon Suite, Skoon provides an online dashboard that gives her insights into the rented energy system, only for the time she has rented the system. See the example here. Sammy uses this link to see whether she needs to bring back the battery to the warehouse for recharging.

After 4 weeks, the equipment gets picked up by the supplier. To provide insight into the realized savings during the rental, Skoon shares a booking report which is an interactive dashboard which visualises the data of the rental and calculates important environmental statistics, such as CO2 savings.

It’s that easy! And of course, as the data-driven company we are, we store the data from every rental to improve our offer every time. This means, that when you come to us we will have the most optimal energy system available, always.
