The Project

THE CENTRAL CHALLENGE | MEET REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS COST-EFFECTIVELY

Operating in densely populated urban areas like Koivistokade and Amsterdam Centraal comes with its challenges. The primary goal for H. van Wijk was to adhere to the ambitious noise and emission regulations defined by the municipality of Amsterdam. These are especially challenging in historic and congested areas. 

In addition, the absence of a temporary construction grid connection required a standalone solution that could operate independently without compromising power supply reliability.  

The goal was not only to meet these regulatory requirements but to also manage costs effectively, making the financial aspect as crucial as the environment. 

The Process

HOW WE DID IT | HYBRID SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT WITHIN A WEEK AND A HALF

Using clean energy systems like batteries or hybrid generators makes construction companies more likely to win projects from customers like the Amsterdam municipality.  

That is why the energy system booked came from Skoon’s partner Volta Energy. Through its Marketplace Skoon provided a bespoke Volta 6 kVA hybrid energy solution, integrating battery packs, foldable photovoltaics, and a back-up diesel generator running on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). This setup ensured: 

  • Compliance with Amsterdam’s environmental standards. 
  • Significant cost savings over using a traditional diesel generator. 
  • Continuous power supply without grid connection. 

Deployment of the hybrid system was completed within a week and a half after receiving the request and receiving municipal approval. 

USE OF SKOON’S TOOLS
  • Decision tool: This fast deployment is only possible thanks to Skoon’s advanced decision tool, used to simulate the energy demand and match it to the right energy system. 
  • Monitoring and Adjustments: Skoon’s online monitoring tools allowed real-time tracking of energy consumption, with adjustments made to optimize efficiency. 
  • Reporting on successes: Every month and at project completion, a detailed report on energy usage, cost savings, and accurate emissions reduction was provided to H. van Wijk. 

Results

With more than 83% of both fuel usage and CO2 emissions saved, the project not only met Amsterdam’s ambitious environmental regulations but also demonstrated significant cost savings. Which in turn makes it a perfect model for future urban construction projects.
